Getting to Sorá
Sorá sits about 90 minutes from Panama City and is a favorite ‘get away from it all’ destination. Not only is this quaint town nestled within a stunning mountainous oasis, but it is also home to the highly popular gated community, Altos del Maria. Whether you choose to live inside Altos del Maria, or outside in the community of Sorá, this very well be the perfect place for you if you are looking for a tranquil and comfortable mountain escape.
Sorá residents enjoy year-round comfortable temperatures that are typically 10 to 15 degrees cooler than in the capital. In addition, the lack of air and light pollution here mean that you’ll be breathing some of the freshest mountain air imaginable as you take in a sky full of stars each night.
Residents appreciate that this community provides easy access to other parts of the region. The construction of a road between Sorá and El Valle de Antón means that residents can easily take advantage of all that this larger mountain town has to offer when it comes to shopping and dining. And if you’re looking for even more in the way of entertainment and amenities, the much larger Coronado is also about 30 minutes away.
What To Expect In Sorá
Is Sorá the right place for you? The main prerequisite for finding bliss in Sorá is a love of nature and the outdoors. If large cities leave you feeling claustrophobic or drained, you’ll likely love the peace and solace that this mountain community provides. Everywhere you turn in Sorá you’ll find trails for hiking, streams for swimming, and views worth admiring.
Sorá’s residents are comprised of Panamanians, most of whom have second homes there or nature-loving expats that hail from all over the world. While the majority of expat residents live in Altos del Maria, there are also plenty of real estate options (and often more affordable ones) outside the gated community. The majority of expat residents are retirees, though there are also those who work remotely or do occasional business in Panama City and choose to call Sorá home.
Nearly all of the homes in Sorá are single family residences. Homes tend to be spacious and elegant, but don’t always include the modern frills of city condos that would be out of place in these rustic surroundings. Working with an agent who knows the area well, it isn’t hard to find an airy mountain home with million dollar views for far less than what you’d expect to pay elsewhere.
Prospective buyers also have the option to purchase a plot of land in Sorá and build the mountain home of their dreams. This option obviously takes longer than purchasing an existing home but allows buyers to customize every detail and can often be a more affordable option.
Living and Exploring Sorá
There’s no doubt that Sorá’s pristine beauty and relaxing lifestyle are what draw many residents to purchase homes in this secluded community. Residents here might spend their days exploring the nearby trails, discovering waterfalls, and taking in the panoramic views. The region is teeming with wildlife for spotting, including deer, monkeys, sloths, and tropical birds. And the region’s rich volcanic soil makes it the perfect place for those who love to garden, even if you aren’t blessed with a green thumb.
With so much natural beauty to enjoy, most residents don’t mind that Sorá’s amenities are limited. The community does provide access to high-speed internet, Direct TV, cell service, and solid infrastructure, but there is far less in the way of shopping and dining than you will find in larger communities.
Sorá boasts two mini-super markets, Super Sorá being the largest of the two. While far from providing everything you could possibly need, Super Sorá provides enough basics to prevent residents from running to Coronado every time they need eggs or milk. Both stores stock plenty of packaged food and drink staples as well as fresh produce and meat.
For more extensive shopping and dining options, most residents head to either El Valle or Coronado, both of which provide plenty of restaurants and shops. While Sorá’s amenities are certainly not extensive, all residents agree that what the community lacks in restaurants it more than makes up for in fresh air and natural beauty.
