What Panama’s Corredor del Caribe Highway Means for You

Most people looking at Panama’s real estate market are focused on the Pacific side. It’s where the highways are. It’s where most development has been and it’s where conventional wisdom says the smart money goes.

Even here at Panama Equity, we have plenty of properties along the Pacific side.

But what if the real opportunity lies on the Caribbean side, where untouched beaches, lush rainforests and a rich cultural heritage have been waiting for their moment?

Thanks to the Corredor del Caribe, a $91.6 million highway, that moment is now, and it’s changing the mindset of what’s possible on Panama’s Caribbean coast.

What Is the Corredor del Caribe?

The Corredor del Caribe is a brand-new 28-kilometer highway being built in Panama’s Colón province. It connects Quebrada Ancha to María Chiquita, making it much faster and easier to reach Panama’s beautiful — and still affordable — Caribbean coast.

Why Does the Corredor del Caribe Matter?

We’re bringing this up because it’s nearing completion!

Before this highway:

  • Getting to Costa Arriba (the stretch of coast east of Colón) meant slow, congested roads.
  • Tourists and investors mostly ignored the area because it was hard to reach.

Now, with the new highway:

Faster, Smoother Access to Paradise

Reaching Costa Arriba has always meant navigating congested routes through Colón, whether it be a bus ride, helicopter trip or point of a tour.

With the opening of the new highway, though, travel time will be cut by 15–20 minutes, bypassing pothole-filled backroads and offering a direct, scenic route to Panama’s most pristine coastline.

This improved accessibility also means rising property values, just like what happened in Coronado and Punta Pacifica years ago.

While Panama’s Pacific side can get crowded, Costa Arriba remains untouched. This gives you:

Unlike older projects that bulldozed through nature, the Corredor del Caribe includes wildlife crossings, protecting jaguars and endangered species, strict environmental safeguards after pushback from activists and sustainable tourism potential (think eco-lodges, not mega-resorts!).

On paper, it’s a bypass — a way to skip the usual traffic of Sabanitas and Puerto Pilón.

But in reality, it’s a gateway. A full-scale opening of Costa Arriba de Colón, one of the most naturally beautiful, ecologically intact and shockingly overlooked regions in the entire country.

While the Pacific coast is increasingly congested, Costa Arriba offers the exact opposite: wide open spaces, unspoiled beachfront and peace. It’s also about to up a whole new region for tourism and investment beyond Colón city.

Panama’s Caribbean side has always lived in the shadow of the Pacific. For years, it’s been misunderstood and dismissed because of associations with downtown Colón or because it wasn’t easy to get to.

Meaning ‘upper coast,’ Costa Arriba stretches 60 miles from Punta San Blas to Colón, near the Panama Canal. Historically significant since Spanish colonization, it served as a key shipping route for South American gold and silver, with Portobelo as a major port — attracting pirates and bustling trade. 

Later, Antillean and Jamaican influences shaped the region, giving rise to its distinctive Congo culture. Today, the Corredor del Caribe opens access to this culturally rich coastline.

Costa Arriba Panama is not just beautiful. It’s better.

  • Greener: Rolling hills and mountain backdrops make the scenery far more dynamic than much of the flat Pacific coast.
  • Cleaner water: Less river runoff, better reef protection and naturally clearer conditions.
